Welcome to the Home/Family categories of the Open Directory Project.
This category is all about developing the skills and relationships needed for a happy family and parenting experience.
Categories include Large Families, Adoption, Babies, GrandParents and Parent Resources.

Before submitting your site, please review the Guidelines for Submitting a Site.

Adoption

Sites should be submitted to the appropriate subcategory when applicable. Please take the time to review them before submitting.

Following these guidelines will allow us to add your site to the directory as quickly as possible.

  • Submit your site using your main url.
  • Use the site's actual title.
  • Create a brief description, under 25 words, listing the current content of your site (not the future content).
  • Do not simply list keywords.
  • Do not use first person verbiage (we, our, us).
  • Do not use marketing verbiage (We're the best!, Most awesome site, Check it Out!).
  • Sites which are gateways or splash pages to affiliate sites will not be added.
This category lists websites dealing with adoption and related issues.

Babies

Home and Family oriented websites for and about babies, baby parenting, etc. This is not intended as a directory for shopping sites and it NOT for "free stuff" sorts of sites that either run "offers" through affiliate links or ask for private information in exchange for some goodies. Instead please send shopping sites to the correct shopping category.

To speed up the process of getting a site submitted, please locate the most accurate category for your site.

Chats and Forums

Please submit chat rooms, bulletin boards, discussion groups, and message boards where the topic is the family. Sites which deal with a specific component of the family (i.e. babies, parenting, or adoption) should be submitted to a more specific category.
This category lists interactive, real-time online chat rooms, bulletin boards, discussion groups, and message boards where the topic is the family.

Childcare

This topic covers all areas in the field of child care- that is, caring for children. This includes child day care centers, family child care homes, nannies, au pairs, and baby-sitters.

Family Resources and Support

Family Resources and Support provides a connection to a variety of resources and supports geared toward the family.

Sites listed will support family oriented directories, online services, web and chat domains for families, family fun and entertainment, family health, planning family parties and events or family vacations/trips.

Linking to other Open Directory Categories is available to assist in locating resources and support for child care, parenting, family recreation and travel, marriage, divorce, family counseling, aging, death and dying.

Family Websites

I M P O R T A N T

Family sites are listed by family name (surname, last name). If you fail to mention your family name, your submission will be delayed. No sites are listed in the main category. Instead, submit your site according the first letter of your family name. Submissions to the wrong categories will also be delayed.

Sites are listed in a very specific format. Please submit your site in this format - it will speed up your submission.

  1. The "Title" of your submission is your family name.
  2. The first sentence of the "Description" must mention the family members' names and their locality.
  3. The second sentence of the "Description" should describe the content of the site.

Example of a good submission

Title: Anderson
Description: John and Mary, and children Dick and Francis, and the dog Fluffy, from Paris in France. Introduction to France, and photos of family reunion, wedding and Dick's first tooth.

Example of a bad submission

Title: Welcome to John & Mary's page!!!
Description: Check out John and Mary Anderson's nice page about France and their family Dick, Francis and Fluffy the furry friend!

If your site contains no English, submit it to the appropriate category in World/. If your site is a personal site, or if your site contains only a small family section, submit it to Society/People/Personal_Homepages. If your site deals more with family history, genealogy or family research, submit it to Society/Genealogy/Surnames.

Family web sites are sites about families and the individual family members.

Foster Care

This category brings together those links that lead to resources, support and information about foster care and those involved.

Large Families

This category is for large IMMEDIATE families only.

Do NOT submit your site here if:

**You have a family page and have 1-3 children. Add those to Personal Home Pages and/or Family Websites.

**You have a page on your large *extended* families (ie. info on just you and your 2 kids and your 29 cousins and aunts and uncles). Add these sites to Family Websites.

**You run a genealogy page. These can be added to Genealogy.

**You sell products for families. These can be added to Shopping/Children and/or Shopping/Home and Garden.

You have 4 or more children, but that fact is not a main concern of your page. The sites listed here are resources for and about large families and should have information about them.

Large families (for the purpose of the this category), are families which consist of four or more children, whether they be by birth, adoption or fostering. Pages must be centered around the fact that you have a large family.

Multiple Births

If you are submitting to the main category of Family/Multiple_Births, your site should NOT be geared towards parenting. Those sites should be submitted to the appropriate subcategory. The main category will feature sites with broad information that does not have a focus on parenting, or an area covered by a subcategory.

If you are submitting a mother/parent of twins/multiples club, please do so in the Home/Family/Multiple_Births/Parenting/Clubs section in the following format:

State Designation - Title

ie - WA - Seattle Mothers of Multiples Club

Your entry will be listed faster if it is submitted in this format.

Multiples refers to multiple births, which include twins, triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, sextuplets and higher births.

Please submit your site to the appropriate sub category.

Parenting

Home/Family/Parenting is all about raising children and developing the skills and relationships needed for a happy family experience. Categories include Cloth Diapering, Fathering, Step Parenting and Parent Resources.

Pregnancy

Sites related to human pregnancy, from pre-conception through pre-delivery.

Reunions

Sites related to adoption searches and reunions should be submitted to Home: Family: Adoption: Search and Reunion

Sites related to reunions of military veterans should be submitted to Society: Military: Veterans: Reunions

Reunions of other organizations should be submitted to Society: Organizations: Social: Reunions

School reunions are listed in the appropriate Regional catagory.

Family websites, even if they include a reunion, should be submitted to the correct category in Family Websites

Genealogy websites, even if they include a reunion, should be submitted to the correct category in Genealogy: Surnames

Sites which offer general information on family reunions.

Runaways

Informative sites related to runaways and their families. Examples include national and regional runaway hotlines, databases of missing children, research and other documented information on runaways, and personal accounts by runaways and their families.
